CRESSON -- The State Correctional Institution property, which has remained empty for years, was sold this week.
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of General Services said the property, of more than 300 acres, was sold to Carl Weaver of Smicksburg, Pennsylvania.
According to the department, it is unclear what Weaver will do with the property, and his plan for its future was not required with a bid.
Weaver made one of four bids offered to the Commonwealth, and was awarded the property for $600,000.
Another 93 acres on the property belongs to the Redevelopment Authority of Cambria County.
According to county documents, the county signed a 45-year lease with Energy Management Inc. to build a gas-fired electric generation plant.
The property is still being studied for feasibility, and once the plan is deemed feasible, the lease requires construction of the plant to begin within six years.
The next step for the newly sold 300-plus acres is for the state to draft a sales agreement.
Once Weaver signs and returns the agreement within 15 days of receiving it, the sale will be complete.
