Authorities in Somerset County are working to clean up approximately 2,000 gallons of heating oil that was found spilled in the Stoystown area.

Emergency officials reported Tuesday that the Highland Tank & Manufacturing Company discovered last Thursday, Oct. 27, that some of the piping for its heating system had been incorrectly installed, causing the fuel spill.

“Anytime a hazardous material escapes its container or vessel and enters into our environment that poses a concern for multiple reasons.”

Joel Landis, the Director of the Somerset County Department of Emergency Services, recommends that the local residents, and anyone that is traveling through the area, be cautious of the clean up.

Officials say McCutcheon Enterprises is currently the contracted clean up crew on site.

Company officials say they believe most of the impact from the spill has been limited to the soil on Highland Tank's property, but they say an unknown amount did make its way through the surrounding environment to Oven Run Creek.

"I hope they caught it in time and it doesn't harm any people or wildlife," one resident said.

Crew members from McCutcheon say a lot of the oil has been cleaned up but crews will remain on site for a few more weeks.

"We are currently working with state and federal agencies in the mitigation and recovery of the fuel oil from the facility.”

If residents have any questions about the spill, contact Highland Tank at 814-893-8500.
