University Park, PA (WJAC) — At Penn State's University Park campus, construction continues on a new art museum.
The $85 million project features an exterior that highlights the geology of Pennsylvania.
Billed as the largest art museum between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Penn State's Palmer Museum has been in the heart of the University Park campus since 1972.
With more than 10-thousand pieces of art, finding more room at that location would practically be impossible.
That led to the decision to build a new museum, at a new location on campus.
Construction is now well underway on the 71,000 square foot facility.
The new Palmer Museum of Art will be located off of Bigler Road, near the Arboretum, and the Penn State law school.
“Designed by architect Allied Works, the innovative and versatile design features a series of interlocking pavilions clad in regional sandstone from a quarry near Punxsutawney. It’s gorgeous. This stone evokes the geology of central Pennsylvania.”
With nearly double the amount of current exhibition space, along with other new features, the museum is expected to open next spring.
