PERU, Maine (WMGE) — An Oxford County man has been charged with murdering his wife in western Maine.
On Wednesday, he appeared virtually in court hours after the deadly encounter along Route 108 in Peru Tuesday night.
David Gaudreau, 60, appeared remotely from the Cumberland County Jail. He sobbed during the entire hearing.
He only appeared on the screen a few times as he wiped away tears or covered his face.
And at one point, he let out a statement.
"What have I f---ing done?" David Gaudreau said through tears.
One Peru resident, who didn't want to want to go on camera, said he heard several gunshots right after 7 p.m. He initially thought they were fireworks and kids.
He then realized it was a woman, whose screams he says will stick with him for a long time.
"We knew there was some kind of commotion going on, and I didn't dare to go outside at the time," Roben Dollof, who heard the gunshots, said.
Dolloff was home with her husband and could tell the shooting was close by.
"I froze. I thought, 'What should we do? Should we lock the doors and go hide?'" Dolloff said.
State police said witnesses reported a truck stopped next to a car and someone fired into the vehicle.
Dale Gaudreau, 59, was found dead in the driver's seat.
Investigators added her husband David Gaudreau called several family members and told them he shot her.
In a statement, Rumford Hospital's president said its community is heartbroken over the loss of one of their own.
"Dale Gaudreau, RN was a fixture at Rumford Hospital for 20 years, caring for patients in the Medical Surgery Department. She was a true leader, serving as a mentor to other nurses and was the recipient of numerous nursing excellence awards. Our thoughts are with Dale’s family during this difficult time," said Stephany Jacques, president of Rumford Hospital.
Late Tuesday night, he surrendered to law enforcement.
"From what I heard, it's a pretty sad situation. And I feel for all the family members," Dolloff said.
David Gaudreau did not enter a plea.
He is being held without bail.
Gaudreau's next hearing hasn't been scheduled yet.
