CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — With the weather warming up and counties beginning to reopen again, kids are itching to get back to playing their favorite sports and activities.
West Suburban Little League spent Saturday morning getting their fields prepped and ready to go for their players. The league says they will begin practices when Cambria County enters the green phase next week.
Players and coaches of the West Suburban Little League have been anxiously awaiting the day they can get their season started.
“First and for most relief. Happiness, joy, all the good emotions. We’ve been telling everyone to be patient with us. We purposely did not cancel anything. We just told them, ‘wait for us, wait for us.’ We finally got the word we can go. So now we can play a modified season and actually get the kids out and playing outside and playing baseball,” said West Suburban Little League president, Adam Hale.
But before players can step up to the plate, very part of the fields must be prepared; from home plate all the way to the outfield.
“The expenses to keep everything looking like a baseball field. Weed eating, grass cutting, gasoline for all of that. As you would expect, we pay for everything. So, we have electric, sewer, water and all those expenses year round. And then the dirt that we have to put in,” said Hale.
Batters will get their chance to swing again but with fewer fans watching from the bleachers.
“Right now, the guidelines from the state say two per player. 90 max per field. We are going to try to stay well under those requirements. Hand washing, sanitizing equipment, anything CDC and DOH tells us to do we are going to follow to keep everyone safe and healthy but also have fun,” said Hale.
Around 400 players from ages three to fifteen are a part of the West Suburban Little League. Coaches and players seem to be in agreeance, they’re excited to take a swing at this season.
“Every family had to make their own decision as to if they felt comfortable to come play. For the most part, they’re itching to go,” said Hale.
